Youth Hunt – “Christmas style”Georgia Delta chapter takes a youngster out for a memorable hunt. Article by – Lee Chadwick –
12/13/03 First, let me express my sincerest thanks to several people 1) Marvin Brown (Flooded Slough)- for taking the time away from his duck hunting to film and photograph a special hunt. 2) Charlie Baker (Ducked Up) and Jeff Morton (JDAWG) - for their financial support. 3) DNR Ranger Craig Fulgham- for taking time out of his schedule to attend and also for locating a willing landowner. 4) Chris McEver- the landowner who also volunteered his time and calling abilities to guide the hunt. 5) Bass Pro Shops – Donation of the shells and discounts on the items given to Cody. Now, this morning I was blessed to take a great kid, Cody Ray, on his first duck hunt. Cody is a kid that I was introduced to by Ed Persky. Ed is the state director for SYC. Cody has had to face numerous challenges in his young life. He was born with a skull problem that caused his brain to sit on his spinal cord. He then had to undergo 6 operations to fix this problem. During the course of these operations, Cody first developed spinal meningitis, then later bacterial meningitis. Both of which have left their mark on him physically. But a nicer kid you would be hard pressed to find. Well, when we got to the spot we were hunting, he was given his very own new pair of waders, wader coat, gloves, Delta hat, Delta blind bag, Delta floating gun case, and a duck call that I made for him. He then hunted with Chris in a Ghenoe while me, my son and Craig watched from another boat. Marvin was in my float tube in the swamp with his camcorder, recording the affair. First light comes, and so do the ducks. Cody shot a duck early, but it was able to swim away. But then he made a perfect double on a pair of gadwall, drake and hen. We are having both of these mounted for him. I would be hard pressed to tell you who was happier in my boat. Even my son said he would not shoot until Cody had several ducks on the water. So I guess you could say that today I was doubly blessed. First I was able to take a kid on his first duck hunt and watch him connect. But also I am blessed to have a son that his so kind hearted. Mitchell may only be 10 years old, but his heart is much older. He was a great help to Cody too. I really can’t remember a more rewarding day afield.
